Here is our first DRIVER SPOTLIGHT featuring ALLY AMELL Driver of the 2X 70'S CLASS CAR by Michael Sweet I'd like to introduce to you the driver of the 1933 Chevy Coach # 2X, from Watertown, NY, Ally Amell. Ally is one of our lifetime members, racing with our club since 1986. He attended his first race in 1952 at Edgewater Speedway. After watching the likes of Dick May, Andy Ray, Frank Andre and Francis Brimmer, Ally set his sights on racing, building his first race car in 1968. It was a 1953 Chevy 6 cylinder Late Model he raced at Watertown Fairgrounds. Finishing 10th in points let the competition know a new kid was in town. He enjoyed success in 1969 but disaster struck in 1970 when a fire destroyed his entire race shop. Ally sold his car to Charlie Caprara, which began Charlie's racing career. Ally returned to racing in 1986 with the Midstate club, racing at almost every track in NY state, three in Pennsylvania and five tracks in Canada. One time after Ally blew his motor at the famed Syracuse Mile, another Midstate member John McNamee called to offer his spare motor to keep him racing. Ally believes our club is a real family affair. Racing for Ally has always been a family affair and family is all important to Ally. He married his childhood schoolmate Carol, and has four children, all who have raced either in motorcross, go-carts, street stock or Modifieds. His son Michael is currently racing Legends Cars in Kentucky and Ohio. If you saw Ally racing last year, remember this. He's putting together a 'new' vintage car for this year using the same '33 Chevy Coach body. Not bad for a guy who went through 46 weeks of chemotherapy last year and has raced on every surface Evans Mills has thrown at us! |
