Richard 'Dick' Ackerman #43A - 50's Class Written by Jeff Ackerman Updated by Brenda Sonnenberg Founding club member, Richard Ackerman, was born October 7, 1940 and lives in New Berlin, NY. Richard and his wife Susan have four children -- Woolsey, Jeffrey, Thomas and Catherin. His occupations of Funeral Director and Rural Letter Carrier have not kept him from a 50 year racing career and being a member of Midstate longer than any other active member. Richard 'Dick' Ackerman most memorable moment in his racing career was winning his first feature win at Brookfield, where incidentally, he began racing in 1954. His favorite racetrack is the old Geddes Mile, now the Syracuse Mile at the NYS Fairgrounds. Other personal favorites he cites are football, Fats Domino, just about any food and no particular color as he is color blind. He enjoys restoring old cars and raising deving beef cows. Before driving his own car, Richard race at Morris, Brookfield, Syracuse, Lebanon Valley and Five Mile Point in a 1933 Ford 296, built by Willy Wust. does a big read #43 on a white Ford coupe sliding through the turns spark any memories out there? "The Mouseville Monster" Dick owns 2 vintage race cars, his actual racer and the Mouseville Monster which he often displays a motorsports shows. This 1933 Ford five window coupe was modified for racing at William Wust's, Edmeston, NY garage in 1959. Originally prepared for competition at the Midstate (Morris) and Brookfield, NY speedways, it also logged time at Maple Grove (Waterloo), Five Mile Point, Lebanon Valley and NYSF speedways from 1959 to 1965. Owned by William Wust of Edmeston, the car was driven by Kurzon 'Moose' Cary of Cooperstown, NY. The 'Mouseville Monster" nickname was adapted in honor of Cary's driving style, which included an affinity for bending frontends while riding roughshod over opponents enroute to several track championships at Midstate and Brookfield. Cary visited the winners circle so many times that the management at Midstate placed a bounty out for the unheard of sum of $25 for anyone who could beat him. Equipped with a 'full House' racing flathead mercury, three Stromberg carbs, a Harmon-Collins ignition and a 'Mickey Mouse ' Halibrand quick change rearend, the car was very competitive wherever the team traveled. The original crew consisted of Willy Wust, Moose Cary, Mark Enman and Richard Ackerman. In 1984, the Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club was formed. Having taken a 19 year break from the racing scene, Dick decided he needed a toy. Purchased for $35, the 'Mouseville Monster' was then restored to the original specifications by Dick, his sons Thomas and Jeff , Richard Howard and Jeff Wiggins for competition with the Midstate club. since restoration, it has gone through a few changes (in reference to frontends), given much pleasure and even found the winner's circle for a couple of features and several heats. The pride and joy of the Ackerman racing team, the car resides in New Berlin and is a fine example of an original 'modified' stock car. Ackerman as since retired the car and has his own 1931 Ford flathead that he races competitively with the Midstate club. The 'Mean' looking 43A is a beaut! And it's certainly not a sleeper! Dick knows how to get it around the track and is a sure bet for victory lane after it's all said and done. Besides his racing talents, Dick as been an integral part of the Midstate club. He has held the position of President a couple of times and is called upon often for his vast knowledge of both MVSCC history and northeastern vintage racing history. Now that the club is letting him just 'race', he continues to keep 'Flathead' yesteryear in motion. His love of 'flatheads' is quite apparent as he is always scouring the country side for more abandoned flathead parts. If you know of any flathead caches, please give Dick a call: 607-847-6303 |
