For those of you who long for the good old days of stock car racing, the
Midstate Vintage Stock Car Club (MVSCC) is for you. Formed in 1984 in Morris,
NY, the home of the old Midstate Speedway on the Morris Fairgrounds, by Carl
Carpenter, Dick Ackerman, Dave Allen, Mel Ogden and Ralph Rastaad, the Midstate
has grown to over 75 race-ready cars, 85 drivers and over 100 members. MVSCC
members are located throughout New York state as well as Pennsylvania,
Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, New Jersey plus Eastern and Southern Ontario
(Canada). Some of the cars are the original race machines from the 1950's
through the early 70's and others have been restored either by the driver/owner
or owner, while other drivers have always wanted to own a car and/or race, but
never have until now. The ages of the drivers range from 19 years old to 73
years young. The club has both male and female drivers. The basic differences of the classes deal primarily with frame, suspension and engine, however there are different engine specifications for each class. The 50/60's class car bodies must be pre-1948 and American made. The 50's class cars engines may be Unlimited Flatheads or Stove Bolt Sixes, manufactured before 1962, or 1963 and up, In-line Sixes that conform to the 50's class "Late" engine rules. Must have a pre-1948 steel body. The 60's class must also have original frames but are allowed to alter frame configuration and suspension location and type. No coil-over shocks on rear. Steel leaf springs on rear. May use closed tube quick-change rear. The 60's class engines are In-line Sixes that conform to the 60's class engine rules. Must have a pre-1948 steel body. The 70's class may have an original factory type or tube type frame. (Dirt Modified and Dirt Sportsmen). The 70's class engines are In-line Sixes or V8 engines that conform to the 70's class engine rules. Coil over or steel leaf spring suspension. No Torsion Bars Allowed. Must have steel body, however in the Fall of 2001, the club opened the door a little more into the early 70's by approving a new rule that permits bodies up tp 1975 Vegas, Falcons, Valients, Pintos and Gremlins etc.(sub-compact American made) along with the existing pre-48's. Each show the club is involved in has heat races and features for all classes, the 50/60's and 70's. No matter how much the individual program changes, the constant is the great excitement of watching these vintage race cars speed around both dirt and asphalt tracks. For the older race fans, it reminds them of their youth. For the younger fans, it's a chance to see what racing was like before money and pre-manufactured race car parts became the driving force, when ingenuity and mechanical talents were heavily relied upon along side driver skill. Back then the competition was fierce, but they had (and still have) a lot of fun. Up until recently, the club attained sponsors and/or were paid by the tracks to cover both admission for 3 crew members and gas. With the economy experiencing a down turn, most times, except for a few loyal sponsors providing some tow money, the members haul to tracks and race for free. When you factor in the escalating price of gas, it adds up to one thing - dedication to the preservation of racing yesteryear. | ||
